Nicole Kelleners-Smeets is working as a staff dermatologist at the Dermatology department of the Maastricht University Medical Centre since 2006 and since 2013 she was appointed associate professor at the Maastricht University. Her expertise lies within the field of clinical dermato-oncology and dermatologic surgery, especially Mohs surgery. As a PhD student, her work focused on surgical treatment of basal cell carcinoma. She carried out a randomised controlled trial comparing Mohs surgery with standard excision, that was published in The Lancet. Her research line is still focused on skin cancer, especially non-melanoma skin cancer. The aim of this research is to answer clinical questions by performing mostly clinical studies. Thereby improving quality of care for skin cancer patients. Nicole is currently president of the Multidisciplinary Dutch guideline committee on Basal Cell Carcinoma and of the Dutch committee on Mohs Micrographic Surgery.
