Herbert Pfister, PhD is Director of the Institute of Virology and Professor of Virology at the University of Cologne School of Medicine in Cologne, Germany. He received his PhD degree at the University Erlangen-Nürnberg and did post-doctoral training on papillomaviruses at the University of Freiburg. Since the early 1980's he has studied the role of human papillomaviruses (HPV) in anogenital and skin cancer. His laboratory worked on detection of HPV in human cancers, cloning and characterization of viral DNA, modular structure of viral enhancers and functional characterization of HPV proteins. In 2005, the first transgenic mouse model for cutaneous oncogenic HPV has been established and exploited to analyze the synergism between HPV infections and UV-light-exposure, keratinocyte-immune cell interactions, and possibilities of immunoprevention of HPV induced skin tumors. His work combined basic science with collaborations with epidemiologists and clinicians. Since 2009, Dr. Pfister is Chairman of the German National Reference Center for Papilloma- and Polyomaviruses.
